Portable operation
Portable operation means setting up an amateur station away from its normal fixed location. Check whether the authorisation permits the proposed operation and whether a location update or other permission is required. Record the temporary location in the log.
Mobile operation
A mobile station operates while installed in or associated with a moving vehicle. Safe installation matters. The antenna must not create a hazard, and the equipment must not distract the driver.
Operation from a vehicle
Do not handle a microphone, radio controls or cables in a way that affects safe driving. Follow road safety laws. The operator remains responsible for the radio transmission and its identification.
Operation on a ship
The 2024 Rules state that an ASOC holder may be permitted to install and operate an amateur station aboard a ship registered in India after making a specific request through the prescribed process. Do not assume that a normal home-station authorisation automatically covers shipboard use.
Operation from an aircraft
Aircraft radio installations are subject to aviation and national rules. An amateur certificate alone does not give permission to install or operate a transmitter on an aircraft. Obtain all required approvals before any such operation.
Foreign amateur visiting India
A foreign licence does not automatically authorise operation in India. The Indian rules provide for permission and administrative clearance in specified cases. The visitor must follow the conditions set by the Indian Government.
Indian amateur visiting another country
An Indian ASOC does not automatically grant operating rights in another country. Check the host country's rules, reciprocal arrangements and temporary operating procedure before transmitting.
CEPT and IARP arrangements
Some countries participate in reciprocal arrangements such as CEPT or IARP. These arrangements can simplify temporary operation for eligible licence holders. They apply only where the host country participates and the operator meets the stated conditions.
International contact restrictions
Before making international contacts, respect the ITU objection list and the rules of the other administration. Do not assume that every country permits amateur communication with every other country.
