What amateur radio is for

Amateur radio is a service for self-training, intercommunication and technical investigations by duly authorised people interested in radio technique. It is intended for personal purposes and not for pecuniary interest. Operators communicate locally and internationally, experiment with antennas and equipment, develop operating skills and may support emergency communications when requested by competent authorities.

02

Why an ASOC is required

The Telecommunications (Amateur Services) Rules, 2024 provide that an amateur station may be established or operated only in accordance with the terms and conditions of an ASOC. Passing the examination is an important step, but operators must also comply with the certificate conditions, permitted bands, emission types and power limits.

03

Who administers the service?

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), through the Wireless Planning & Coordination Wing and its Wireless Monitoring Organisation, administers the amateur radio examination and related regulatory functions. Official examination announcements and application instructions take precedence over information on this independent learning site.
