Station authorisation, location and equipment

Certificate is not a free-standing permission for any station anywhere

An amateur station must be installed and operated under the terms and conditions of the ASOC. The station must be at the location specified in the certificate or in the applicable authorisation.

Station location

The location matters because radio conditions, coordination and regulatory records depend on it. If the operator moves the station, the required change-of-location process must be followed. Do not assume that a permanent move is automatically covered.

Station equipment

The station must be equipped for both reception and transmission. Equipment must be arranged so that it does not endanger people or interrupt other services. It must be kept in safe condition.

Prevent unauthorised access

Radio equipment should be housed so that unauthorised persons cannot operate it. This is important in homes, clubs, schools and shared premises.

Equipment register

The 2024 Rules require records of amateur radio equipment. The record includes the apparatus details, make, model, type and serial number, source or self-assembly details, date received or assembled, purchase details where relevant, and later sale or transfer information.

Import of amateur equipment

Rule 7(3) states that an ASOC holder does not require a separate authorisation for import of amateur radio equipment under that provision. This does not remove the need to comply with other applicable customs, safety or equipment requirements.

SACFA clearance

The Annexure refers to Standing Advisory Committee on Frequency Allocation (SACFA) clearance where applicable. Whether a particular installation needs clearance depends on the current requirements and the nature of the site or installation. Check the current DoT/WPC instructions.

Equipment changes

An operator should keep equipment records accurate when a radio, amplifier, antenna system or other apparatus is added, removed or transferred. Any specific approval or condition in the current authorisation must be followed.
